About This Project

Timber House

Timber House is a mass timber multi-family housing project on the Fraser River waterfront in the Port Royal neighbourhood. The modular design was inspired by the industrial context including stacked shipping containers. The project demonstrates a commitment to the structural and aesthetic potential of cross-laminated timber (CLT) utilizing CLT as the primary structure and extensive interior finish.

The concept wraps 3 building segments around a central courtyard. All units are single loaded to provide cross ventilation, daylight, and views from two sides. Each segment of the building features a unique typology: stacked townhouses, loft units and apartments. The connecting walkways incorporate private outdoor space and spaces for neighbours to meet. The courtyard is a gathering space with southern exposure, community gardens, seating and BBQ facilities, play space, and views of the Fraser River.

The completion of Timber House in 2023 marks the final build-out of the Port Royal neighbourhood. RWA master planned and has been the primary architect for Port Royal since 1996.
